Symptoms our doctors see

  • Stomach pain and cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Suspected food poisoning or gastroenteritis
  • Dehydration after vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Constipation

What the doctor does

  • Examines your abdomen and checks for dehydration
  • Gives you medicine for nausea, diarrhoea or pain, on the spot, so you do not need to find a pharmacy at night
  • Explains what to eat and drink while you recover
  • Tells you if the symptoms need hospital tests such as blood tests or a scan
  • Issues a medical certificate and receipt for your travel insurance

Go to hospital or call 119 if there is severe constant pain, blood in vomit or stool, a very swollen and hard abdomen, or signs of severe dehydration such as confusion or no urine for many hours.

When to call 119 instead

If the person is unconscious, has difficulty breathing, is having a seizure, has severe chest pain or is bleeding heavily, call 119 for an ambulance. 119 is free and answered 24 hours a day. A house call is for illness that is not an emergency of that kind but is too difficult to leave until morning.
