A doctor examines you in your room and can give you medicine on the spot.

Symptoms our doctors can see in your room

Fever and infections
Fever and chills, cold and flu symptoms, suspected influenza or COVID-19
Throat and chest
Sore throat, cough and phlegm, mild wheezing
Stomach and digestion
Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, suspected food poisoning or gastroenteritis, constipation
Head
Headache, dizziness
Heat and fluids
Dehydration, heat exhaustion
Skin and allergy
Hives (urticaria), rash and itching, allergic reactions that are not life-threatening
Urinary
Pain or burning when passing urine, needing to pass urine often
Minor injuries
Small cuts and minor burns
Sleep and anxiety
Being unable to sleep, feeling anxious while away from home
Children
Children who become unwell during a family trip

If you are not sure whether a house call is right for your symptoms, contact us and we will tell you. For life-threatening symptoms, call 119 (see below).

Tests and prescription medicine in your room

Influenza and COVID-19 tests — results on the spot
The doctor tests for influenza and COVID-19 in your room and tells you the result during the visit, so you know straight away and can get the right medicine.
COVID-19 PCR test — result by email the next day
If you need a PCR test, for example for travel, the doctor takes the sample in your room and we email you the result the next day. The PCR test is charged separately from the 80,000 yen flat fee. Please tell us when you make the request that you need a PCR test, and we will tell you the fee.
Prescription medicine
If medicine is needed, the doctor gives it to you in your room, so you do not need to look for a pharmacy at night.
Medical certificate
A medical certificate and a receipt are issued for your travel insurance claim, at no extra cost.

What it costs

Visitors to Japan are normally not covered by Japanese national health insurance, so the visit is a private-pay service.

Fee
JPY 80,000 — one flat fee, tax included.
What the fee covers
The doctor's visit, any tests carried out during the visit, any medicine provided on the spot, the medical certificate and receipt for your insurance claim, and the doctor's travel to you. There is nothing further to pay afterwards. (A COVID-19 PCR test, if you need one, is charged separately.)
Payment
Cash or credit card, paid to the doctor at the time of the visit.
If you hold Japanese health insurance
Insurance rules apply instead. Please tell us when you make the request.

Using your travel insurance

Most travellers pay us directly and then claim the amount back from their own travel insurer after returning home. We issue a medical certificate and a receipt so that you have the documents your insurer will ask for. There is no extra charge for these documents — they are covered by the flat fee.

Whether a claim is accepted, and how much is returned, is decided by your insurance company under the terms of your policy. Please check your policy, and tell us when you make the request if you need the documents in a particular format.

What the doctor can do in your room

  • Examine you and explain what is likely going on
  • Carry out tests on the spot where appropriate, such as influenza and COVID-19 tests
  • Provide medicine directly, so you do not need to find a pharmacy at night
  • Issue a medical certificate and receipt for your insurance claim
  • Advise you on whether you should go to a hospital, and what to do next

What a house call cannot do

A visit to your room is not a substitute for a hospital. X-rays, CT and MRI scans, blood tests that need a laboratory, surgery and admission are not possible at your accommodation. If the doctor judges that you need hospital care, you will be told so during the visit and advised on where to go.

Any medicine carries the possibility of side effects. The doctor will explain this before anything is given, and you can ask questions at any point.

When to call 119 instead

If the person is unconscious, having difficulty breathing, having a seizure, has severe chest pain, or is bleeding heavily, call 119 for an ambulance. 119 is free and is answered 24 hours a day.

A house call is for situations that are not an emergency of that kind, but that are too difficult to leave until morning.
